Opening Statement from Steve Davis OBE
The future of Snooker both as a professional spectacle and social sport has, in my opinion, never been brighter. However I believe a real responsibility now rests with the current body of professional players to establish and support clear guidelines and objectives for the development of competition at all levels, and also to show support by their direct involvement in The Snooker Players Association.
Our first objective is to review the opportunity for expanding both the number, and method for approving ranking events. The Association will initially be discussing with all key promoters the feasibility of a tiered but accessible system for awarding ranking event status. We believe this can only be achieved by a totally independent body representing the players with no promoter of commercial interest as a driver.
This is the first we hope of many improvements in the management of the game and a real demonstration of how we can adopt and incorporate the views of the top professionals to have a positive impact across all levels of the sport.
Regards
Steve Davis OBE
